Five Suspects Arrested For Stealing Mangrove Trees
Police arrested five suspects in relation to the attack of the Navy coastguards in Point Pedro.
The incident occurred when the suspects were being arrested for illegally cutting down mangrove forest in the Warani Lagoon reserve in Point-Pedro.
The Police Media Unit said the suspects were arrested along with the equipment they used to cut the mangroves, a motorbike and a cab and the stock of mangrove wood they had removed from the area.
The raid was conducted according to a tip-off received by the police.
Suspects were identified as residents of Karaweddi and Warani
Accordingly the suspects are charged with damaging a police checkpoint in Point-Pedro, assaulting and obstructing the duties of officers.
The suspects will be produced before the Point-Pedro Magistrates Court today.
