Cabinet Approves Motor Traffic Fines To Be Increased 25,000


The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal to amend fines obtained for various offences committed under the Motor Traffic Act.

Fines on traffic offenses which will increase to Rs. 25,000 are the following
  • Access of vehicle in to a railway road unsafely
  • Deploying persons without driving license in services
  • Driving a vehicle without a valid insurance cover
  • Driving without a valid driving license.
  • Driving under the influence liquor and drugs

abinet also approved the increase in fines over several other offences

  • The 5,000 rupee fine imposed on underage drivers will be increased to 30,000 rupees.
  • The fine imposed for driving 50% above the required speed limit has been set at 15,000 rupees.
  • A 3,000 rupee fine will be imposed on motorists who surpass the stipulated speed limit by 20%, 5,000 rupees for driving at a speed limit between 20-30% and 10,000 rupees for exceeding the speed limit between 30-50%.
  • The fine imposed on using mobile phones while driving has been set at 2,000 rupees.
  • The fine imposed for overtaking from the left has been increased to 2,000 rupees while reckless driving will lead to a fine of 10,000 rupees.
