Parliament Minister ravi karunanayaka Resigns Today

Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake this afternoon publicly resigned from the Cabinet saying he was sacrificing his position to ‘set an example’ and for ‘democracy and good governance.

Raising the point that he had been advised by his lawyers that there was no reason for him to resign, he said he chose to make the decision anyway in keeping with his ‘moral conscience’ and on behalf of the party and the government.

He continued to defend his position regarding the allegations brought against him in Treasury bond issue and furnished the Parliament with details of a Seylan Bank loan he had taken in order to buy the Monarch apartment at the centre of the controversy.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called for a party leaders’ meeting today to discuss future business of the House. JO parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardane said he would seek a date at today’s meeting to debate the no-confidence motion against Minister Karunanayake.

However, according to reports the government is determined to push the minister to resign without leaving room for a vote on the motion
